The Vans company was started by Paul Van Doren
in Southern California with his partners, Jim Van Doren, Gordy Lee and Serge
D'Elia. Their opening day in Anaheim, California was March 15, 1966 but
they had only three styles and only display shoes. The racks were stacked
with empty boxes to make it look like a full shoe store.
A few customers came into the Vans store that day and picked the shoes they
wanted but since none were made they had to come back later to pick them
up as they needed to be made. When the customers came back in the afternoon
to get their shoes they needed change but Paul nor Gordy hadn't thought
of this and they didn't have any change to give them so they just gave them
the shoes and asked them to come back the next day to pay for them. All
the customers showed up the next day to pay for their shoes.
The first vans shoe had the traditional waffle pattern sole. Then in 1976
skate boarders and skaters started wearing Vans shoes and wanted other colors
on them. In march 19 1976 Vans produced their classic vans authentic shoes.
That shoe was designed by professional skaters Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta.
Now Vans footwear features more than 60 styles from the vans classic deck
shoes, slip-ons, skate highs skateboard shoes, snowboard boots and also
now vans sandals. And they are carried in over 190 company-owned stores
and many independent shoe stores. |
